Have you or your child been scratching the head a lot lately? This could be a sign of head lice. Kids usually get head lice at school from other kids due to sharing hats and other clothes. The kids then bring it home and spread it to family members. Other signs of head lice infestation are the red rashes on your scalp from the head lice bites. Head lice can be a real nuisance and if left untreated, can lead to infection from the bites.
The best way to get rid of head lice is to prevent them from getting on you in the first place. Tell your child to not share clothing, especially hats, with other kids. Also, do not share combs and anything else that could get in contact with your hair. You should also check your child for lice every once in awhile. There are special combs that you can buy for checking for head lice and their eggs or nits.
However, if prevention of head lice is not possible, then you’ll have to treat the problem. You’ll want to get some head lice shampoo such as Rid or Nix. These shampoos are basically pesticides in small quantities. They are just enough to get rid of the head lice but shouldn’t be enough to harm you. If you develop rashes or any other unusual symptoms from using the shampoo, then discontinue using it.
Wash all your clothes, bed sheets, and another other fabrics that you can in contact with in hot water to get rid of head lice. Head lice and their nits may be hiding in those above mentioned things so using hot water should kill them. Also make sure you put your clothes in the dryer and set it to hot too. For things that you can’t wash, you can put it in a sealed plastic bag for several weeks to starve the head lice. Also, don’t forget to vacuum the carpet and clean furniture in which your head may have come in contact with. This is to ensure you get rid of all the head lice.
You can also purchase prescription head lice medication if the shampoo just isn’t enough for you. In order to get these medications though, you would need to see a doctor first.
